IT takes a bit to surprise Gympie Smallbore Rifle and Silhouette Club member Ed Powell, but at the weekend he was left struggling for words.

Powell boasts a long history with the club and was shocked on Saturday evening to learn the range had been named after him.

A new, wooden carved sign was unveiled signalling the change, and a special function attended by almost 40 people marked the occasion.

Club member William Lintott joined the gathering in paying tribute to a man who has been a driving force behind the club.

“Ed thought he was attending a social barbecue at the club, but found himself the centre of attention when Laurie Aberdein began an instalment of This Is Your Life,” Lintott said.

Powell’s wife Joan worked covertly to help compile information on Ed’s life, making the presentation a touching tribute to a tireless volunteer.

Lintott said the idea to honour Ed by renaming the club’s range was hatched some time ago.

“The idea has been brought up some time ago,” Lintott said.

“Many members of Ed’s family were on hand to see this honour bestowed on him.”

Meanwhile, State Secretary of the Queensland Target Sports, Roy Muller, delivered a heartfelt speech.

Former club member Barry Sturgess, one of the founding members when the club was formed in 1962, was also present to show his support.
